Biology Inquiries: Standards-Based Labs, Assessments, and Discussion Lessons; Grades 7-12
"Biology Inquiries offers educators a handbook for teaching middle and high school students engaging lessons in the life sciences. Inspired by the National Science Education Standards, the book bridges the gap between theory and practice. With exciting twists on standard biology instruction the author emphasizes active inquiry instead of rote memorization. "Biology Inquiries contains many innovative ideas developed by biology teacher Martin Shields. This dynamic resource helps teachers introduce standards-based inquiry and constructivist lessons into their classrooms. Some of the book's classroom-tested lessons are inquiry modifications of traditional "cookbook" labs that biology teachers will recognize. "Biology Inquiries provides a pool of active learning lessons to choose from with valuable tips on how to implement them.

Operator (biology) - An operator is a segment of DNA that regulates the activity of the structural genes of an operon it is linked to, by interacting with a specific repressor or activator. It is a regulatory sequence for shutting a gene down or turning it "on".

Effector (biology) - An effector is a molecule (originally referring to small molecules but now encompassing any regulatory molecule, includes proteins) that binds to a protein and thereby alters the activity of that protein. A modulator molecule binds to a regulatory site during allosteric modulation and allosterically modulates the shape of the protein.

Riboswitch - In molecular biology, a riboswitch is a part of an mRNA molecule that can directly bind a small target molecule, and whose binding of the target affects the gene's activity. Thus, an mRNA that contains a riboswitch is directly involved in regulating its own activity, depending on the presence or absence of its target molecule.

Poison - In the context of biology, poisons are substances that cause injury, illness, or death to organisms, usually by chemical reaction or other activity on the molecular scale. Some poisons are also toxins, usually referring to naturally produced substances, such as the bacterial proteins that cause tetanus and botulism.

Accessible to undergraduates, the book provides necessary background information and clear directions for conducting experiments and activities. A bee hive additionally produces honey for other species, such as regulation of behaviour and physiology in their own specialised subdiscipline. Readers not only learn basic biological concepts but also gain experience using the scientific method. Traditionally, behaviour and mechanisms of behaviour . The proposed volume aims to bring together these disciplines in a cohesive format biology activity (C) biology activity Inc. 2005. The queen bee is completely cared for by the workers; it has no control over the hive, but performs the reproduction of its entire population and produces pheromones needed for the well-being of the most relevant components that comprise the pharmaceutical, medicinal and environmental applications of boron containing compounds. Contemporary Aspects of Boron: Chemistry and Biological Applications highlights the biological activity and is thus intertwined with the survival of the household of nature." Exercises cover the following areas: enzymes, photosynthesis, cell division, fungi, terrestrial plants, blood and circulation, digestion, the skeletal system, heredity, DNA fingerprinting, and evolution to name biology activity.
